Ketamine Anxiety

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety affects about 40 million Americans, approximately 20% of the population.  Nearly 30-40% of those do not achieve remission with standard medications and therapies. Anxiety is characterized by excessive worrying, nervousness, apprehension, obsessions, and fear. While evaluating Ketamine for antidepressant effects, it was observed that anxiety scores also dramatically improved.  A series of low dose IV ketamine infusions have been proven to effectively treat disquietude in patients with treatment resistance.  Since Ketamine stimulates brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and growth of neurons in the brain, Ketamine increases synaptic connections.  This growth and increased neuronal activity help to relieve symptoms of disquietude.   Many people with disquietude are prescribed benzodiazepines which can influence ketamine infusions.  Benzodiazepines bind to some of the same receptors as ketamine in the brain and can block Ketamine from being fully effective.  Ketamine has shown to still be effective with these patients, and we will collaborate with you and your mental health professional to establish a safe and optimal plan for you.

Anxiety disorders are thought to affect up to 40 million adults every year. Unfortunately, not even 40% of those cases are getting treatment for their disquietude. It may not be able to be “cured” with treatment in most cases, but the symptoms can be managed with treatment and relief can be provided.

Prescriptive medications can take weeks or even months to see results and require constant dose monitoring. Ketamine on the other hand is administered on a short duration schedule until symptoms subside. Side affects are minimal compared to prescription medication.
